Let’s face it, It’s not where you’re from, it’s where the money at, at least that’s my adage to the cliche. But, I’ve been watching rappers who may not have come from the big city, but somehow they managed to make a BIG NAME for themselves within in hip-hop.

Fayetteville, North Carolina

Before heading to New York for college, J.Cole was living in his hometown in North Carolina. The Ville (as he calls it) has heavily influenced his music and the rapper rarely goes a song without mentioning the city that molded him. The city is also a military city, it has two bases located just right outside the city. I guess we will hear more stories from the “Fayettenam” native on his debut album.

Fort Myers, Florida

Plies often brags about his city on a hand full of his songs, the coastal city of Fort Myers is located in southwest Florida. The city is known for its nice weather and beaches. But, don’t let the nice weather and water fool you, the goons are outside in the bushes.

Rochester, New York

I have know idea what Rochester is known for, I just know I know it. DJ Green Lantern (former DJ of Eminem) hailed out of this city, but I really didn’t get a clear understanding until I heard the rapper SunNY. Although, he is no where to be found, his tales of hustling on the track “Soul Of A Hustler” won’t be forgotten.

Port Arthur, Texas

Ask someone, “Where the legendary group UGK is from?” And you might get Houston as answer. This is perhaps one of the most confusing hip-hop trivia questions. But, hey, it happens. But the once duo is from a town right outside of Houston, called Port Arthur. (But, I know you guys didn’t care).

Tallahassee, Florida

Aside from the FSU football team and the two universities, no one was really expecting anything to come out of this college town — that’s until T-Pain arrived. You may hear it in his music now and then, but T-Pain rarely talks about being from Tallahassee. Maybe it’s because the cops arrested him after he came to town in his Lamborghini.
